Antimicrobial and Anti-Inflammatory Oral Effects of Fermented Lingonberry Juice—A One-Year Prospective Human Intervention Study

A clinical one- year oral study in 25 adult patients with fermented lingonberry oral rinse. Candida yeast and Streptococcus mutans levels, bleeding of the gums, amount of plaque and low-grade periodontal tissue degrading inflammation measured with aMMP-8 oral rinse proteolysis chair-side test diminished significantly.

Clinical and Experimental Dental Research, July 2022

Fermented lingonberry juice's effects on active MMP-8 (aMMP-8), bleeding on probing (BOP), and visible plaque index (VPI) in dental implants. A clinical pilot mouthwash study

A pilot case/control dental implant study with adult patients. Bleeding on probing, visible plaque and active tissue degrading enzyme MMP-8 (aMMP-8) levels diminished significantly in dental implants in the group using fermented lingonberry juice as a mouthwash.

Effects of Fermented Lingonberry Juice Mouthwash on Salivary Parameters-A One-Year Prospective Human Intervention Study

The effects of fermented lingonberry juice as an oral rinse was studied in 25 adult patients. The secretion of both stimulated and resting saliva levels increased, the buffering capacity of the saliva got better, and the pH of the saliva rose. Dry mouth symptoms decreased. The effects were statistically significant.

Isolation, characterization and regulation of moonlighting proteases from Candida glabrata cell wall

In this study Candida glabrata cell wall proteolytic enzymes were isolated and identified. Over 50 kDa enzymes were capable of converting MMP-8 enzyme to its active (aMMP-8) form and this was inhibited by fermented lingonberry juice.

Microorganisms, September 2019

Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory lingonberry mouthwash- a clinical pilot study in the oral cavity

A clinical study with 30 adult patients using fermented lingonberry juice as a mouthwash. Candida and Streptococcus mutans levels, bleeding of the gums, plaque and aMMP-8 enzyme levels, i.e. risk for irreversible tissue destruction decreased significantly.

Fermented lingonberry juice inhibits oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma invasion in vitro similarly to curcuminIn

Fermented lingonberry juice was studied on aggressive tongue carcinoma cells in laboratory tests. Fermented lingonberry juice inhibited proliferation and invasion similar to curcumin: a known anti-invasive and MMP-inhibition agent.

Effect of Fermented Lingonberry Juice on Candida glabrata Intracellular Protein Expression

The effect of fermented lingonberry juice on Candida glabrata yeast intracellular protein expression. Fermented lingonberry juice reduced significantly carbohydrate-metabolism- and stress-response-related protein levels, which may have a role in virulence.

RESEARCH

Results of studies are outstanding

Dr Pirjo Pärnänen (Associate Professor in Oral Microbiology, DMD, PhD) has been researching fermented lingonberry juice for over 15 years, and has conducted a number of clinical studies with impressive outcomes.

Laboratory and clinical studies have shown a reduction in dental plaque and bleeding of the gums, and additionally antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, and antioxidant properties. Caries-related Streptococcus mutans and candidosis- related Candida levels are reduced as well as periodontal disease- related pathogen levels. Levels of lactobacilli on the other hand are increased, which is thought to be a beneficial probiotic effect balancing the oral microbiota.
